Ruby Bridges
Ruby Bridges was born in September 8, 1954 at Tylertown, Mississippi. She is still alive today, she’s 57 right now. When Bridges was only six years old she was the first African American to enter an all white elementary school. This makes her a Civil Rights Activist. Her first day of school marshals walked her to school for protection, her mother went also. They took her to the principal’s office so they could talk, but the principal never came. During that people outside were yelling and throwing stuff also classes weren’t held. She thought it was a Mardi Gras Celebration. They spent their whole day in there then they went home. Ruby thought school was easy because they did nothing. The second day of school parents took their children out of school and they had a boycott. The parents were holding signs, throwing things, and one of them had a black doll in a coffin. This day she learned with her teacher Ms. Henry and it was only her and Ms. Henry because all the other children were taken out of the school by their parents. Since she was the only kid there she didn’t have recess and she didn’t eat in the cafeteria she ate in the classroom. Every time she had to go to the bathroom the marshals had to walk her there. After she was done with school, when she was older she met Ms. Henry on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Also Ruby formed the Ruby Bridges Foundation, it promoted the values of tolerance, respect, and appreciation of all differences in 1999. In 2007 The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis made an exhibit for Ruby Bridges. She made our life better because now our schools are integrated and have no boycott!
